Q: “What is Corten Steel?”
A: Corten is a steel alloy that has a very high tensile strength. Closely related to spring-steel, it is about twice as strong as plain sheet metal of comparable thickness. Hardness and tensile strength are important properties, but Corten’s main advantage is its resistance to corrosion. Corten will not rust, rather it will oxidize slowly to a dull grey-brown color. The chief application of Corten is in out-door sculpture and marine vessel fabrication. Both are areas where rust resistance is of extreme importance. We find that Corten makes for an exceptional mortar tub, too!
Q: “Why do you call it The Ugly Tub”?
A: The ugly tub is shipped unpainted. We you receive it, it will be a brown rusty color. Other manufacturers paint their tubs to protect them from from rust. Corten steel does not rust, it turns brown and stays that way, so the added expense of painting is not justified. The result is a truly UGLY TUB that will outlast any other tub 4-to-1.
